Intercity Rivals to Support Doddie Aid at 1872 Cup

22 December 2023

Edinburgh Rugby and Glasgow Warriors have both thrown their support behind Doddie Aid, with both clubs set to support the charity at the upcoming 1872 Cup derbies.

The famous rivals face each other in back-to-back intercity derbies in the coming fortnight, with the opening leg at Scotstoun this evening (22 December, kick-off 7.35pm), before the teams lock horns in the deciding leg at Scottish Gas Murrayfield on Saturday 30 December (kick-off 3pm).

Both clubs will be encouraging supporters to join their respective regions at each derby, with a special Doddie Aid legends half-time challenge planned at both games, with former players from both sides of the M8 set to take part.

Team Edinburgh and Scotland captain Jamie Ritchie has backed the club’s support of Doddie Aid at the 1872 Cup derbies, encouraging fans to sign-up for the capital region ahead of January.

Ritchie said: “It’s awesome that both Edinburgh and Glasgow Warriors are able to support My Name’5 Doddie Foundation at the upcoming 1872 Cup derbies. It’s a cause that means so much to all Scottish rugby supporters and I can think of no better platform to promote the charity than at the two biggest club derbies of the year.

“I’m proud to be captaining Team Edinburgh for this year’s Doddie Aid – I’d encourage all our fans to get signed up for Team Edinburgh and let’s raise vital funds to beat MND.”

Our Director of Fundraising and Communications at Paul Thompson said: “Doddie Aid is all about coming together, having fun and raising vital funds to invest in MND research. And so, we’ll be doing just that at the 1872 Cup games on 22 and 30 December.

“With Robert Wainwright at the forefront, we’ll be putting Edinburgh Rugby and Glasgow Warriors legends to the test with half-time challenges, and reminding everyone to sign up for Doddie Aid in time for the new year.”
