Charlotte's story

01 February 2024

We’re shining a spotlight on Charlotte who is taking part in Doddie Aid for the second time, in honour of her mum Lindsay.

Charlotte first took part in Doddie Aid 2023, she told us: “My mum was diagnosed with MND in September 2020, and passed away in December 2022.

“Throughout her illness, the presence of Doddie Aid and the MND community brought us a lot of strength and a real sense that we weren't alone.

“After she passed away, feeling like I was able to do something in her honour and knowing that others were doing the same was a tremendous source of solace.

“It gave me something to do and encouraged me to get out of the house and go out cycling.”

Despite being in the final throes of a PhD, Charlotte is taking part in Doddie Aid again this year. She told us: “This year I’ve been doing a lot more running, and I’ve just hit my 100 mile target!

“Last year Doddie Aid was like an escape for me. This year taking part has felt like a more active choice - I’ve felt more positive, for me it’s a way to still connect with my mum.Which is funny, as she was the type of person who avoided exercise!

“The great thing about Doddie Aid is you can engage with it how you want. If you’re feeling a bit down and you want encouragement to get out, or if you want to do lots of exercise.

“It feels so easy to be part of the Doddie Aid community, and I’ve really enjoyed it. A real highlight for me was joining a Team Edinburgh ride around Arthur’s Seat this year. I got to meet lots of other people taking part - which is amazing.”

Charlotte is one of thousands of you who are making a difference by taking part in Doddie Aid 2024. We wantto thank each and every one of you who has taken part this year. Together, we can be part of the cure.
